ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X is a very pricey notebook meant first and foremost for gaming. It boasts a nice GeForce GTX980M graphics card for hardcore players not wanting to deal with dropping frame rates and lag. Other components support enjoyable gaming experience: there are i7 processor, whopping 32GB RAM and 512GB SSD offering you some heavyweight performance. But as the laptop is so damn expensive, it must be given some thought whether buying this monster makes any sense. Below, you’ll find my take on the subject.

General performance

As anybody can expect by looking at its price tag, ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X has a very solid performance. Starting with the most important, the processor here is Core i7-4870HQ, a quad-core beast offering 2.5GHz clock speed and 3.7GHz turbo. It beats the vast majority of other processors, this is visible in benchmark tests with CPU Mark giving the chip a ridiculously high ~9200 points. Putting things to perspective, the low-voltage i7-5500U found in some budget gaming notebooks receives a grade of ~4000. Entry level i3s in general-use laptops get around 3000 points. So a lot of oomph is available here, you will find no application or game lagging due to the processor.

There’s 32GB DDR3L 1600MHz memory, installed on four 8GB sticks. That’s very, very huge amount of RAM, nobody should ever need more than that. In fact, it’s an overkill, all gamers should do with 16GB and most even with 8GB. But at least you’re not going to run out of memory.

Storage solution is the best possible one: 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and 512GB SSD. Indeed, plenty of storage and performance is available. The operating system (Windows 8.1 64-bit) is installed on one SSD partition. To the other partition you can put frequently accessed files, such as games and many programs. The terabyte hard drive can be used entirely for “static” files like multimedia – music and photos like to stay in HDD.

Comments about gaming

To put it simply, ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X is a killer for gaming. The excellent GeForce GTX980M (4GB GDDR5) card is powering the system. The popular GTA 5 with settings maxed out and Full HD will give ~30FPS, not bad, but perhaps not enough for the most picky players. Reducing settings a bit, to high details, will yield excellent ~50FPS. Another popular game, The Witcher 3, is going to run at ~30 frame rates on ultra and Full HD.

How about the display?

ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X features a proper 17.3″ matte display for players. Resolution is 1920×1080 which you can easily utilize thanks to the beefy graphics card. Panel type is IPS, meaning great viewing angles and colors showing accurately. It doesn’t support touch, but that’s probably not important for gamers anyway.

Does it have good connectivity?

ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X offers four USB 3.0 ports to accommodate a variety of peripherals. There are also Thunderbolt and HDMI ports which you can use with external monitor like HD television.

Some gaming laptops – like many Alienwares – don’t have an optical drive, but this one has a nice BluRay burner. In addition to BR it writes to CD and DVD. You can also transfer data from and to the laptop with the SD/MMC card reader.

Internet can be accessed with the 1000Mbps RJ-45 port or 802.11AC WiFi. Bluetooth 4.0 is also there, you can connect a supporting device to that and save one USB port.

Video chatting isn’t going to be problem, the laptop has a 1.2MP webcam for that.

Any other noteworthy things?

Like every gaming laptop, also ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X is big. It weighs 8.4 pounds and thickness is 1.7 inches. In another words, this computer is a monster. And another thing, the 8-cell 88Whr battery will empty quickly. It’s good for 3-4 hours when web browsing, but expect the fun to last only for one hour or so when gaming.

The keyboard is illuminated, and there’s a 10-key pad on the right hand side.

There are not many people who might want to buy laptop as expensive as ASUS ROG G751JY-DB73X. But those who want – the players – will probably get a gaming experience of their lifetime. The components, most importantly with help of the strong graphics card, can easily keep high/very high settings and Full HD (or even Ultra HD) on any game. And as somebody commented, that will be true for titles being released in the next couple of years. Another thing that’s excellent is the cooling system, heat buildup is minimal even during gaming. What comes to running software, the solid-state drive will make the computer fly and Windows booting will take only some seconds. That all costs a lot, but if you want only the best and very future proof gaming laptop, this ASUS should be worth every penny.
