Can you get a proper gaming laptop for 1000 dollars? That’s the questions. ASUS ROG G751JL-WH71(WX) is a possible answer: it features a decent GTX965M graphics engine, and on top of that, a super Core i7-4270HQ processor and 16GB RAM. It looks like we have something here, but let’s not make any hasty judgments just yet…
If we’re talking about non-gaming activities, there’s no limit of what this ASUS can do. The 4th generation Intel Core i7-4270HQ quad-core processor happens to offer a high 2.6GHz clock speed and even a higher 3.6GHz turbo, and getting well over 8000 points in CPU Mark tells a lot about its performance. Your typical processors, such as i5-5200U, get around 3500 points in the same test and even those are considered power user friendly choices. So imagine what this Core i7 with over double score can do.
The laptop contains 16GB memory. From what I can see it’s already maxed out but you shouldn’t ever need more, using full sixteen gigabytes is unlikely to happen. The storage drive doesn’t get any extra points; it’s only a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. Luckily, there seems to be an extra slot for a drive. Just make sure you’re getting a 9.5mm 2.5″ SATA unit and you can install that to the second slot.
Gaming in brief
So it’s the GeForce GTX965M (2GB GDDR5) that’s responsible of the graphics section. Simply put, you’ll be able to use high/ultra settings and Full HD with most of the games. As a real life example, GTA 5 will give ~60FPS using maxed out settings and 1080p. High settings and 1080p on The Witcher 3 will give around 50 frames per second.
What ports and connections does it have?
Four 3.0 USB ports are offered so you can simultaneously connect a gaming mouse, printer and more. Video outputs include VGA, Thunderbolt and HDMI so all kinds of external displays can be hooked up. Optical drive is likewise available, it burns to CDs and DVDs however BluRays are not supported.
For networking you can use the integrated 802.11A/C WiFi card. It works with Bluetooth 4.0 too. There’s also a Gigabit RJ-45 jack, you can connect a network cable to that.
SD/MMC card reader is available on the machine. So is a webcam, it supports 1.2MP video resolution.
Other important things
The 17.3″ matte display features 1920×1080 resolution and IPS panel type. It is not a touch enabled screen.
The keyboard has a red backlight feature.
Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system, it seems to be pre-loaded on the system.
The 8-cell 88Whrs battery, while gaming, will last 1-2 hours. The whole laptop with battery weighs 8.4 pounds, that’s very heavy but that’s what gaming notebooks often are.
ASUS ROG G751JL-WH71(WX) is a fast laptop, and it really looks like you can get a gaming rig for less than 1000 bucks. All games will run fluently with high, or even maximum settings, and naturally every piece of software will have no problems running either. One cumbersome thing would be the hard drive; if you want to make this system even faster install SSD and you’re settled. All in all, if it’s games you want to play but have a limited budget, this ASUS should put a smile on your face.
