What do you think about ASUS? Good? Bad? At least I think it’s one of the best laptop brands. They’re durable, good-looking and often price-performance ratio is decent. But is this also the case with Asus R516UX or is that laptop an exception to the rule? Let’s examine that notebook and find out more!

General performance

Asus R516UX is full of components that probably make a professional computer user happy. There is the Intel Core i7-6500U, a 6th generation processor offering you a 2.5GHz clock and 3.1GHz turbo boost on its dual cores (also keep in mind the very decent CPU Mark score ~4300). To keep things running smoothly also 8GB memory has been installed to the laptop, and you can up that to 16GB if you want (it just takes two chips as the current configuration is 2x4GB).

The storage section looks rather basic, consisting of one 1TB storage drive with 5400RPM spindle speed. It’s excellent for folks who want plenty of space for their huge files, but of course the performance isn’t up to 2016’s standards. You’re welcome to remove it and put a snappy SSD in if you want.

Gaming friendly or not?

The Asus is sort of a gamer’s laptop. There is a mid-range graphics card GeForce GTX950M (2GB GDDR3) installed in the system, and if you can do with less than high settings you’re all good. For example, using high and 1080p you’d get ~35FPS on GTA 5 but that will increase a lot if you drop the resolution or settings a bit. On medium and 720p you could expect around 40FPS on Fallout 4. Popular (yet non-demanding) titles such as Counter-Strike: Go and League of Legends are a piece of cake here.

Ports and connections

Asus R516UX has a set of ports to take care of your device and peripheral connecting needs. In total four USB ports are at your disposal, two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0. You may also connect a secondary monitor like HDTV here by using the HDMI-out on the laptop’s side.

Connecting to Internet happens through the Gigabit LAN port (RJ-45 jack) or WiFi card (supports 802.11ac standard and Bluetooth 4.0).

No optical drive is included but you can get one that plugs to USB on the laptop. However media card reader is present, working with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.

Other important features

Asus R516UX contains a 15.6-inches screen with the sweet 1920×1080 resolution. It has a matte finish and no touch support. The webcam is embedded in the top screen bezel.

The item seems to be rather new so there are no user reports about the battery life. However, the 3-cell 48Whrs unit is advertised to last up to 5 hours, this means in reality you can get ~4 hours when surfing the web.

The keyboard comes with backlight.

They call Asus R516UX a gaming laptop, and some sort of gaming laptop it indeed is, but you need to be careful with settings if you want smooth FPS on the latest games. Now, that is surely understandable because the price is so low – often times, players’ notebooks cost two times this. Keeping that in mind, I can recommend the Asus for casual players and power users out there.
