A gaming laptop or desktop, what’s the difference? Well, laptop you can take wherever you go, but on the other hand desktop offers better performance for your buck. In this review, I’ll concentrate on ASUS G20CB-WS71 desktop and tell if it’s the real deal for gaming or not…

So it’s good for gaming?

ASUS G20CB-WS71 is the essential gaming desktop thanks to the beefy GeForce GTX980 graphics card. The unit contains 4GB DDR5 memory and is one of the best gaming cards still (even after the introduction of the new GTX1000 series). You can turn on Full HD resolution (or even higher) and max settings without fear of getting lag; games like Fallout 4 and GTA 5 will give you a smooth +60 frames per second. The card is attached to the only PCI-e x16 slot in this machine.

How about other components?

Like the graphics engine, also processor is top-notch in ASUS G20CB-WS71. The machine comes with Intel Core i7-6700HQ, the popular quad-core unit offering 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo. I can’t think of any programs that would be too big an effort for it, also multitasking is handled good. The memory included is 16GB DDR4-type which can be upgraded to 32GB (yet I don’t think anyone would really benefit from having so much RAM).

The storage drive section consists of one terabyte 7200RPM hard drive and 256GB SATA SSD. If you open the cover, both can be replaced with other drives if you want to. However, this configuration is ace, it gives you all the raw storage space in the world but also great performance thanks to the SSD.

Ports and connections good?

ASUS G20CB-WS71 holds an acceptable amount of ports for a desktop. There are six USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 connectors available for plugging in some peripherals. The way to connect a monitor is through the full-sized HDMI or DVI outputs (supports three simultaneous displays). Gigabit RJ-45 LAN port is included for networking, but you can also use the 802.11ac WiFi adapter if you want (supports Bluetooth 4.0 too).

The unit comes with a DVD burner which means both CDs and DVDs can be read and created. There’s no built-in media card reader as far as I know.

Other important things and features

This ASUS is a sleek computer but just keep in mind it does not include a monitor, just USB gaming keyboard and mouse. So the display you must buy separately!

The operating system for this unit is Windows 10 Home Premium 64-bit.

It’s not a surprise that computer like ASUS G20CB-WS71 runs any game, be it from 2016 or 2012, without issues. The processor is so strong, and together with GeForce GTX980 they form an impeccable duo for hardcore gaming all day long. The only question with this unit is the cost: it’s a pricey desktop so you better have some dough available. If the financing is not a problem, then this ASUS is an excellent buy for you!
