It’s a lot of interesting components inside the ASUS K501UX. There’s the just-released 6th Generation Core i7 processor for decent performance and 256GB solid-state drive making sure programs are loaded quickly. Also graphics card is a dedicated one. The ASUS certainly looks like a perfect choice, but is it really so? Perhaps not, let’s try to find out more below…

So what is it good for?

ASUS K501UX is good for activities requiring a lot from the processor. Here, the unit is Intel Core i7-6500U, a new 6th Generation dual core processor featuring 2.5GHz clock rate and 3.1GHz turbo. You’ll find a lot of performance in that Intel, it receives ~4300 CPU Mark points which is excellent for a notebook (for your reference, processors in average laptops get around 3000 these days). Install Photoshop, virtualization app, anything, the processor will handle that without issues.

RAM is excellent 8GB however part of it, 4GB, seems to be on-board memory. The other half, 4GB, is installed on a stick which you can remove. Thus, the maximum RAM would be 12GB (with 4GB onboard and a 8GB stick). The storage is also excellent, a 256GB solid-state drive, that plus the 8GB RAM setup also mean software shouldn’t lag and the system starts up in seconds.

The 15.6″ non-touch screen supports Full HD, plenty of screen estate is guaranteed. Professionals working with images (and video) will benefit from this. The panel type is matte TN (Twisted Nematics).

The graphics are handled by GeForce GTX950M using 2GB dedicated GDDR3 memory. It’s not too powerful but you can surely keep some eye candy on. For example, with GTA 5 you could put full settings and 1080p resolution and reach ~30 frames per second. Of course with many games you’ll reach the golden +60FPS, Counter-Strike: Go being one example.

Does it suck at something?

To be honest there aren’t many bad things about ASUS K501UX The gaming performance isn’t surely top-notch, but you can still do a lot with the GTX950M.

What devices can be connected?

ASUS K501UX can take four USB devices at the same time, there are two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports available. Using the laptop through external monitor, like HDTV, is also possible thanks to the unit’s HDMI output. SD cards can be inserted as well.

CDs and DVDs however you can’t use unless you get an external drive, the notebook has no built-in DVD drive.

You can connect to Internet using RJ-45 jack or 802.11 A/C WiFi. Bluetooth 4.0 is enabled too.

The webcam seems to support only VGA resolution, don’t expect to make high quality videos with that.

Any other things I should know?

The unit weighs only 4.4 pounds, less than 5 pounds like these models often are. The 3-cell 48Whrs battery should last for five hours, also user reports speak about good battery life.

The keyboard is a backlit chiclet one.

ASUS K501UX very much looks like a power user oriented laptop. It has tons of processing power, plenty of RAM and a fast storage drive. On top of that, a Full HD screen and dedicated graphics are offered, so even gamers will find joy in this system. Considering what you’re getting, the price isn’t that bad. A recommended choice by!
