At a quick glance ASUS GL753VE-DS74 seems to be everything a gamer requires. Large screen is there, so is a dedicated GeForce graphics card. A new Core i7 processor is commanding the system and fast solid-state serving your files. What more would a hardcore gamer ask for? Might be you haven’t noticed yet, but there are a few quirks you should know. Let me introduce you to this laptop better…
How good is it for gamers?
Oh, there is a lot ASUS GL753VE-DS74 can do for your game cravings, after all it was made for that job. The graphics performance is brought by GeForce GTX1050 Ti, the upgraded version of the plain GTX1050, with 4GB GDDR5 memory. It can be still considered a budget video card, not reaching the performance of GTX 1060 (let alone the flagships GTX 1070 and 1080). But still, rather strong performance for a laptop can be expected:
– The Witcher 3 +30FPS
– Battlefield 4 +50FPS
– GTA 5 +50FPS
– Doom +60FPS
Those examples were tested on high/ultra settings and Full HD resolution. The one thing to keep in mind, the GTX 1050 doesn’t support Virtual Reality, only the GTX 1060 and above do.
How about performance for software?
ASUS GL753VE-DS74 is all you need to run your programs, be they lightweight or heavy. The essential thing inside is Intel Core i7-7700HQ, one of the Intel’s newer heavy-duty quad-core processors. The clock speed of this monster starts from an already-high 2.8GHz, while it also has turbo boost of 3.8GHz. Feel free to throw any kind of software, such as video editors, at it – the CPU Mark score being 9000 there is nothing that is too much for this processor!
The RAM size is 16GB and it is of course the DDR4 version. It’s installed on one stick, and for the benefit of upgraders, one slot is free. You can max out the RAM at 32 gigabytes with two sticks. But if you need my advice, I wouldn’t do this. 16GB will be all a gamer or power user needs.
The storage side of things is well-thought and executed in this unit. First, there is a terabyte hard drive, a slow 5400RPM one, for storing a lot of files in the laptop. But perhaps more importantly, also a 256GB M.2 solid-state drive is offered. As far as I know, the operating system is pre-loaded on the SSD part, making Windows operate fast. I recommend installing your favorite games on the SSD as well.
How’s the connectivity and ports?
You get a single dedicated video port, a full-sized HDMI-output. It feeds 4K resolution for monitors so you can use it with televisions, PC displays and all without problems.
In ASUS GL753VE-DS74, the total number of USB ports is four. One is the older USB 2.0 while two are the newer and faster USB 3.0. Being quite an expensive laptop it also comes with USB Type-C port. This connector accepts many kinds of standards (HDMI, RJ-45 etc.) but you will need an adapter for that. Luckily, those adapters are cheap and readily available.
There is a DVD burner in the machine so nothing will come on your way of installing games from discs. In addition, media card reader is present, uploading data (like games) is possible through that as well. Also, if you have things like digital cameras, you might want to move the photos from that to the laptop via the memory card slot.
Two options are offered for Internet access: the way of cable with Gigabit RJ-45, or the way of wireless using the 802.11ac (2×2) standard WiFi adapter. It also accepts Bluetooth 4.0 devices.
What other interesting things does the notebook have?
The ASUS GL753VE-DS74 has been described as high quality display in hands-on reviews. For this price I can easy believe that. The 17.3 inches non-touch screen naturally offer 1080p resolution and comes with IPS-like screen. It’s not IPS but “IPS-like” because the IPS technology is licensed LG. Anyway, viewing angles of ~180 degrees are present.
The notebook also has one webcam, in the usual location above the screen.
Battery life won’t be magnificent. You can expect just one or two hour if you are gaming. That is however not only an issue with this laptop but all the gaming machines. It’s a 4-cell (48Whr) battery inside and it’s integrated, meaning replacing would be a tough job!
The keyboard is backlit here.
It stands a reason to call ASUS GL753VE-DS74 one of the best mid-priced gaming laptops of 2017. See, if you don’t absolutely require all eye candy on with Full HD resolution and expecting top FPS, you have nothing to worry about. You can still play even the most graphics-intense games on high(ish) settings. Naturally, everything you want to do with software will be handled effortlessly – that’s the core job of the i7 processor, DDR4 memory and solid-state drive. In addition, it’s going to be a breeze to look at the large screen on your gaming sessions. Disadvantages are the same than in any gaming computer: poor battery life and portability. If you can stand those “flaws”, this ASUS will only put a huge smile on your gamer face!
