To buy a gaming laptop is always a thrilling task, because you don’t want to spend too much money but still want a decent bitcruncher to take care of your games. Well, in the case of ASUS FX502VM, all looks promising. This well-priced notebook is equipped with top-notch graphics, the GTX 1060, and already many favorable reviews have been posted in trusted websites. So there’s something good going on, let’s find out more about that…
How good for gaming?
The truth is, GeForce GTX 1060 is one of the best graphics engines there is right now. That one, with 3GB dedicated video RAM, is installed in ASUS FX502VM to bring you rather insane gaming performance. The card is actually fast enough for Quad HD gaming, however the maximum this notebook’s screen spits out is Full HD. So you will not be at loss with frame rates. Take a look at these examples (with ultra settings, of course):
– The Witcher 3, ~50FPS
– Doom, ~80FPS
– Battlefield 4, ~90FPS
It will only be smooth frames that you will experience!
This model has 16GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM installed. As far as I know, half of it is onboard memory and other half installed on a stick. The RAM seems to be maxed out already so you can not upgrade it.
The processor choice is very decent, the Intel Core i5-6300HQ going up to 3.2GHz with turbo while the base frequency stays at 2.3GHz. The unit has four cores and a CPU Mark score of ~5900. It’s definitely sufficient for complex programs, those including image/video editing and programming.
One bad thing about the laptop is, it lacks a solid-state drive. There’s just your typical spinning hard drive (1TB 7200RPM) installed. Well, another version of this model still offers SSD so you can go for that if you wish. Installing solid-state drive can be done yourself as well, the notebook contains an empty M.2 2280 slot for that!
Ports and connections
To hook up devices to ASUS FX502VM is not an issue. The notebook sports three USB 3.0 ports on the sides, and even one USB 3.1 Type-C is present for extended connectivity. For your external monitor HDMI and miniDisplayPort are offered.
Look, this particular model (FX502VM) does not include DVD burner. So, if it’s this model you want and also desire to use discs, you can get an external drive. Also SD card slot is included, it supports SD, SDHC, SDXC and MMC formats.
Internet is reachable with the Gigabit Etherner port on the side, or then use the top-class 802.11ac WiFi card that works with Bluetooth, too.
What other important things are there?
ASUS FX502VM contains a 15.6″ matte display with no touch support. The resolution is 1920×1080 which is sufficient for laptop gaming. Refresh rate is 60hz on this model. Video chats on Skype are possible, HD webcam is found in the top bezel. All in all, many folks who bought this notebook say the display is beautiful, the brightness is great etc. So, probably the best thing in this computer.
The 4 cells battery doesn’t perform that well. People have been reporting just 3 hours when not gaming (like browsing the web) and around half of that under gameplay. It is what it is, these gaming notebooks often have poor batteries or components that drain it quickly.
The keyboard is illuminated.
Getting ASUS FX502VM is not a stupid move, at all. Inside its neatly designed shell you will find fantastic performance for the latest Triple A games – the most important component being the GTX 1060 card without doubt. The processor isn’t any worse, RAM is great too, however the hard drive section might need upgrade to SSD if you want the top performance. The screen has received praise for its clarity and Full HD support, so looking at it on extended gaming sessions is enjoyable. For real high FPS gaming without paying an arm and leg this ASUS should be your go-to choice!
