ASUS F556UA-AS54, that is one of the latest laptops coming out of this Taiwanese computer company’s factories. The notebook in question can be characterized as a power user friendly, after all you will find things like Core i5 processor and solid-state drive inside. But the price is rather low, so is the laptop lacking in something? I will tell you more about that…

The advantages

Considering ASUS F556UA-AS54 is quite an inexpensive model, the performance is super. Processor, for example, is the Intel Core i5-6200U (two cores, 2.3GHz clock speed and 2.8GHz turbo). It manages to get 3900 points in CPU Mark benchmark, an excellent score for a notebook. Compare that to, for example, new i3s that are in the 3000-3500 range. This i5 surely is a power user proof chip (Photoshop and other demanding software welcome). The laptop’s default memory 8GB is also plenty, however it’s not clear if you can actually upgrade it.

Another advantage that affects the performance is the 256GB solid-state drive. The operating system and programs shall open quickly; in general, the whole laptop will feel snappy thanks to the SSD.

There’s a 38Whr polymer battery included (not a replaceable one). It will last for 5-6 hours of lightweight use, such as browsing the web, with a single charge.

The 15.6-inch Full HD display is a treat for this price, just keep in mind touch is not supported. A VGA webcam is embedded in the top screen bezel.

The disadvantages

The only real weak point in such a cheap laptop is gaming performance. ASUS F556UA-AS54 does not have a dedicated graphics card (and it’s not possible to install such an unit), so you will have to do with the integrated Intel HD 520. It’s not a nightmare but you need to be careful with the settings: for example, at low and 1366×768 you’re going to get ~30FPS on GTA 5. Better-running games include Starcraft 2, Steam-based ones (CS: Go etc.), Minecraft and League of Legends.

Other important observations

Connections on ASUS F556UA-AS54 are decent. There are three kinds of USB ports: 2.0, 3.0 and Type-C. Video outputs include VGA and HDMI, an external monitor can be plugged in to those. RJ-45 port is there for connecting to your router with cable, also 802.11 AC-type WiFi + Bluetooth 4.1 card is included if wireless is your thing.

DVD burner is available on the right hand side. The laptop also has SD card reader.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system, it’s pre-installed on this computer.

Summing it up

If it’s performance on budget you prefer, ASUS F556UA-AS54 is your choice. There is a host of high-end components inside (like the said i5 CPU and SSD) so smooth operations should be ensured. That however goes only for software; gaming aspect is bit poor since no dedicated graphics card is found in the machine. The screen is beautiful and supports Full HD. The new (perhaps useful) USB Type-C port is available. All in all, for the money this ASUS offers a lot (minus the gaming performance) – that’s why I recommend checking it out!

can you verify the height/thickness of the ASUS F556UA-AS54? on amazon it is listed at 2.6 inches but this must be a mistake.

It’s surely a mistake, the correct height is 1.0 inches.

Can you also provide accurate numbers for the other two dimensions – Amazon gives one of them as 20″ – can’t believe it’s that large.

      Product Dimension: 15 x 1 x 10.1 inches

That is directly from the Amazon product page.

Yep, battery is non-removeable. Of course, everything can be removed if you try hard enough, but you need to disassemble like half of the laptop to get to the battery.
