If it’s power and performance you appreciate, Asus F555LA-US71 might be worth your money. It includes some of the better components of today, such as Core i7 processor and 8GB low-voltage type memory. The 15-inches display also offers Full HD resolution for you. But are there reasons why one should stay away from this notebook…?

The good

As said above, the processor performance is good in Asus F555LA-US71, at least considering it’s not very expensive laptop. The unit is called Intel Core i7-5500U, a dual-core chip from 2015 meant for power users and professionals. Clock speed is 2.4GHz, turbo is 3.0GHz and CPU Mark (a popular benchmark) gives this processor around 4000 points. So, it’s not the CPU that would become a bottleneck if running heavyweight software is your thing. Neither the memory will cause slowdowns, the system has 8 gigabytes RAM installed. It’s not possible to upgrade the RAM, 8GB is the maximum.

The non-touch display is sweet, a 15.6″ diagonal and the power user proof 1920×1080 resolution. It’s effortless to have two documents, like web browsers, side by side with this Full HD screen. On top of the display, a VGA-level webcam is embedded, it works fine for now and then Skype video chatting or even filming a YouTube video.

The neutral

Hard drive section is not the best feature about Asus F555LA-US71. It’s indeed a conventional 2.5″ hard drive with spinning disk, offering 1TB storage at 5400RPM spindle speed. The good thing is, you can save a lot of data on this laptop, but that will come at the expense of performance. If you want a rather simple way to speed up the notebook, please replace the current drive with a 2.5″ SATA SSD.

There’s a non-removable 2-cell 37Whr battery inside, so if you indeed want to change it, you’ll need tools and take out the bottom of the laptop. The battery will be good for ~4 hours under light use before you need to charge it.

Ports are the usual: three USBs (of which two are version 3.0) for peripherals and VGA + HDMI outputs for connecting an external monitor. Networking will be handled by 802.11 AC-level WiFi (Bluetooth 4.0 supported) and Gigabit LAN port.

The notebook includes a DVD burner and SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader.

The bad

A gamer wouldn’t find Asus F555LA-US71 very enjoyable. It lacks a dedicated graphics, with the i7 processor carrying an integrated graphics chip called Intel HD 5500. You can play low level games with decent FPS on it, however maximum eye candy and great frame rates are not going to happen. As a real life example, you could expect around 25 FPS on GTA 5 played on low settings, and ~50FPS on Counter-Strike: Go played on high settings. It’s not possible to add a dedicated graphics card here.

You won’t find a backlit keyboard in this laptop.

Asus F555LA-US71 is not a bad buy; I’d even say it’s pretty good pick: you’re given a powerful processor, plenty of RAM and a nice Full HD display to play with. I don’t think many people would be able to put the system on its knees with software, however gaming is another thing. As there is no dedicated graphics included, you must be careful with the in-game settings. But for the current price, this laptop is very decent for any non-gaming use!
