A low-cost laptop like ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 usually has disadvantages: slow performance and poor screen. But from what I can see, the said Asus is not that bad: there is a Full HD screen and solid-state drive installed – something you don’t always see in so cheap machines. But this notebook is not without flaws; what those are, I’ll tell you about below!
Is this good laptop for a casual user?
If concentrating purely on the performance side, ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 should be a good casual user laptop. It has a processor called Intel Pentium N3700 which is a quad-core chip whose clock speed changes between 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz (with turbo). However, it’s quite a low-end unit, with CPU Mark benchmark giving it just ~1900 points. You’ll be able to live with that (Office, browser, Skype, that kind of programs), but don’t expect very snappy performance as far as the processor is concerned.
About other interesting components under the hood, the notebook comes with 4GB memory – a good amount for a casual user. You might be able to upgrade it to 8GB however I don’t know how easy that is on such an ultrabook. A better thing is the solid-state drive – you’ll see Windows and other programs boot up extremely quickly, much faster than on old HDD-powered laptops. The storage size itself isn’t that great though, just 128GB.
How about gamers?
ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 doesn’t give a lot to people interested in gaming. The laptop relies on an integrated Intel HD chip for graphics, and let me tell you it’s quite a weak one. It’s games like GTA 5 and The Witcher 3 that would be closer to unplayable, with even low settings giving choppy frame rates. On the other hand, lightweight titles like Runescape and League of Legends are not an issue here.
Would there be enough ports and connectors?
ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 has a good connectivity considering the size and price. To begin with, there are in total three USB ports at your disposal: one is USB 3.0, one is USB 2.0 and one is USB Type-C port (the new type, yes). The sole video output is HDMI-out, in case you want to plug in a monitor to this notebook.
There’s an excellent A/C WiFi that gets you connected to wireless networks. Bear in mind that no dedicated RJ-45 port is found on the machine.
Optical drive is not available, the notebook is so thin. But it’s not a problem since you can connect an external DVD burner via USB. There is also memory card reader in the laptop, it eats at least SD type cards (from digital cameras etc).
A VGA-level webcam is included, the image quality is not magnificent but will surely suffice for video chats with relatives and the like.
What other benefits does it offer?
Well, the display of ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 should be great. Its a Full HD screen (1920×1080 resolution) which offers a lot of screen estate. However I must add that text and icons will look small on 14″ display if you use the Full HD resolution. Luckily, you can change that. It’s not a touchscreen, keep that in mind too.
The battery, a 3-cell 57 Whrs one, should last around 6-7 hours here. It’s quite a long duration, you don’t need to charge it all the time :)
Operating system is Windows 10 (64-bit). The keyboard does not feature backlight.
ASUS EEEBOOK E403SA-US21 is, if nothing else, an inexpensive (almost) ultrabook with a nice display. Especially power users shall like the Full HD resolution, which brings you more screen estate compared to lesser displays. Also the signature edition means you should not have any bloatware installed on this computer. Performance is not too great due to Celeron processor, although the SSD is snappy and will make the computer feel faster compared to its HDD-ridden relatives. So if this kind of compact, high battery life model is what you’re after, consider taking a closer look at this Asus!
