It’s not a new thing that you need to shell out some money to get a proper gaming laptop. Those things include expensive components, mainly a high-end graphics card. That’s exactly what Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV is also about: a gaming laptop with solid dedicated graphics. It looks sweet, yes, but would it be able to run all the games fluently, and how about the value..?
Gaming in nutshell
You can’t get much better laptop for gaming than Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV. The reason is clear: there is a high-end mobile graphics called GeForce GTX980M in the system – with 4GB GDDR5 dedicated memory, that is. This will give you top frame rates and settings for any game (also upcoming ones!). For example, you can expect +60 FPS on games like GTA 5 and The Witcher 3 played on 1080p Full HD resolution and high settings. Currently, it’s the best laptop gaming card out there, so you don’t need hesitate if you’re serious about your hobby.
Does it also work for all software?
There surely is enough oomph in Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV for all software as well. Processor is top-of-the-line Intel Core i7-6700HQ (four core, 2.6GHz clock speed, 3.5GHz turbo) with around 8000 CPU Mark points. That is a very high score, consider that general use laptops get 3000-4000 these days. Thus, throwing in advanced software like video editors won’t be a problem. Also RAM works for power users, the laptop has two 8GB DDR4 sticks installed, totaling at 16GB (which seems to be the memory cap on this laptop).
Also the storage section deserves praise, the notebook has a setup of 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3 platter-based hard drive and 256GB M.2 solid-state drive. You need not to worry about raw storage space, the hard drive will take care of that. In addition, performance will be excellent too: you can put your favorite files and programs on the fast SSD.
What things can be connected?
Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV accepts all the usual peripherals and devices. To begin with, the system is equipped with four USB ports – three are USB 3.0 and one is USB Type-C (which also works as Thunderbolt 3). There is also a dedicated video output, HDMI, you can plug an external monitor to that. Headset and microphone ports are available for audio.
Networking is brought to you by Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) circuit on board and high-end 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.1 WiFi adapter if you want wireless.
One thing you need to remember, the unit has no optical drive. Get an external one if you need disc access. You may also find the media card reader useful, it working with SD card format at least.
There’s a webcam for connecting with your gaming buddies, it supports 1920×1080 resolution at 30fps for video.
Other features and benefits
Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV has a matte 17.3″ Full HD display. A large one, players will probably enjoy it. Touch is not supported.
A heavy-duty 8-cell 92Whr battery is included, some users reported it to last around 5 hours in lightweight use – that’s very good for a gaming laptop. Under gameplay however expect 2 hours maximum.
Keyboard is, of course, backlit.
Simply put, there is not much Alienware AW17R3-7092SLV couldn’t do for a gamer. It has everything a serious player needs: state-of-the-art graphics card, fast processor, plenty of memory and a big Full HD display. You can have a lot of eye candy on with practically any game, that is the reality. Furthermore, running software lightweight and heavy isn’t going to be a problem. Portability is of course compromised, the unit weighs a ton and has that 17.3″ display. But often gamers don’t care; so do take a closer look at this monster if top FPS is your priority!
