You got plenty of cash or good credit? Excellent if you do, because if you want a computer like Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV you need some $$$. These laptops aren’t in the cheapest series of computers, for a pretty clear reason: the components inside – especially the graphics card – are top-notch. But is it a good idea to spend so much on a laptop or not…?
Gaming in nutshell
Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV, being one of the best gaming notebooks, contains a very fancy graphics engine inside. The GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5) is the latest technology from Nvidia and indeed beats most of the older games with flying colors. With Full HD resolution (can’t go higher with this laptop) and ultra settings you can expect popular games such as GTA 5 run at 70FPS, Battlefield 4 at 90FPS and even the demanding Witcher 3 at +50FPS.
Just remember what processor you’ll find in this model. Name is Intel Core i7-6700HQ, it’s actually a desktop quad-core model with high 2.6GHz clock frequency with sweet 3.5GHz turbo. Just a few laptop processors are actually faster than the i7-6700HQ, indeed in CPU Mark it breaks the 8000 points limit. It will survive any type of use, be it multimedia editing or the gaming.
You can believe the RAM section is good in Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV. It holds two 8GB DDR4 (2400MHz) sticks, meaning the memory is 16 gigabytes. If you want to swap those modules you can do so, the maximum RAM will be 32 gigabytes then.
The laptop is rather big so it has space for two storage drives. Installed are one terabyte 7200RPM SATA hard drive, and in addition a 128GB M.2 SATA SSD which also serves as the boot drive (Windows 10 is installed there). Both drives can be replaced if you don’t like them for some reason. But I think they’re just perfect for a gamer.
Ports and connections
You can connect Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV to Internet with two ways. The wireless method works with the WiFi adapter (802.11ac standard and Bluetooth 4.1), while there’s also Gigabit RJ-45 port if you prefer the cable which can be more reliable.
Hooking up a device or two is not a problem, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB Type-C port are at your disposal. There’s also Thunderbolt 3 which supports many standards. The video ports are HDMI-out and miniDisplayPort, connect an external monitor to those if you wish.
I understand the exclusion of DVD burner, but also know the laptop doesn’t have a memory card reader. But you’re not out of luck, those things can be bought separately and used with USB port on this notebook.
Some other interesting things?
You should remember the display on Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV has gotten some positive reviews from people. The 15.6″ non-touch display supports 1920×1080 resolution which I believe is still enough for the majority of gamers. Thanks to the IPS panel the viewing angles will be wide, and the 300-nits maximum brightness means you’re not looking at a dim screen. The panel type is IPS, but I can’t confirm the refresh rate of this model.
As you can expect this laptop includes a backlit keyboard.
Summing it up
Alienware AW15R3-3831SLV works as your go-to gaming notebook. No matter the game you throw at it, the system will run it smooth with full eye candy on. The main thanks goes to the GTX 1060 card, however Core i7 processor and 128GB SSD are no less important in making the general use of this computer feel seamless. Provided you got the money, I see a good reason to get this Alienware for great gaming experience!
