Is it possible to get a laptop for gaming that is also rather affordable? Well, good luck with that. Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV surely boasts decent components for players, but take a look at the price and you see you need to shell out some cash. Below, I’ll tell you my thoughts if the notebook is wroth the hassle or not.
Can I play game X on it?
The answer to the above question is easy: yes, you can. Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV happens to include one of the fastest graphics card there currently is, the GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB GDDR5 memory. Given the maximum resolution of this notebook is 1080p and not more, you will get top frame rates on any game. Take a look at these examples, they’re on Full HD and ultra high settings:
– Doom, +80FPS
– Battlefield 4, +90FPS
– The Witcher 3, +50FPS
So yes, even avid gamers should like this laptop if you ask me!
Is it good for other tasks?
Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV works for any task you give it. You must remember there’s a 6th generation Intel processor inside, the Core i5-6300U. The unit offers four cores, and the clock speed starts from 2.3GHz and goes up to 3.2GHz with turbo. It’s about as fast as general use desktop processors, indeed the CPU Mark score of this unit is around 5800.
A storage drive isn’t that special, you see it’s just a hard drive offering one terabyte space and 7200RPM spindle speed. Exactly this model doesn’t have an extra SSD installed, but other versions of this laptop do – they just cost more as you can imagine. You can also install M.2 SATA solid-state drive inside yourself if you have the required skills.
The memory section is rather well covered, with one 8GB DDR4 (2133MHz) stick installed on the mainboard. This is a good amount for today’s gamers and power users, although remember you can add RAM up to 32GB if you want (with two 16GB sticks, that is).
So in short, the performance for software is stellar. People can use this thing for video editing as well as for lightweight stuff like text editing without issues.
What ports and connections does it have?
Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV offers many different ports to accommodate your device plugging needs. The three USB 3.0 ports may come handy, and one of them actually supports the multi-function Type-C standard. Moreover, there’s a separate Thunderbolt 3 / USB Type-C port included in the laptop.
Networking options are of course pristine, the dual-band 2×2 802.11ac wireless card with Bluetooth 4.1 support works wonders. You’re also good to use the Gigabit RJ-45 port with cable.
You may want to hook up a PC monitor or even HDTV to this beast, for that you’ll find HDMI-out and miniDP on the laptop. Or if you want to boost the notebook’s own gaming performance you can use an external graphics card with the designed port.
DVD burner and media card reader are not included here. But you can buy both and plug them to the USB 3.0 port on this computer.
Miscellaneous things and benefits
The 15.6″ screen should be very enjoyable for a gamer since it supports Full HD resolution, anti-glare coating and 300-nits brightness. The panel type is In-Plane Switching, also known as IPS, which will offer viewing angles closer to 180 degrees. Unfortunately, I can’t confirm the refresh rate and G-Sync support of this exact model.
The keyboard features backlight, just like you could expect from a notebook of this caliber.
Summing it up
You probably have a good reason to buy Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV if gaming, the hardcore sort, is close to your heart. The graphics performance in this notebook is strong, with the GTX 1060 graphics card providing some insane oomph for any game played on maxed out settings. Be it Triple A titles or older games you’re looking at, FPS is going to be smooth. One worse thing would be the missing solid-state drive, but you can install one yourself later. As it is, the Alienware will make an avid gamer happy!
