Want a gaming laptop that doesn’t freeze and slow down no matter what game you are throwing at it? Then, choosing a notebook such as Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV should be something to think about. It includes a beefy Core i7 processor, GTX 970M graphics engine and a beautiful Ultra HD display. But, the big question is, is this expensive item really worth the money? I’ll tell you that below…

How’s the gaming performance?

The first thing you may want to note about the components in Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV, is the graphics card. It’s not just some integrated one, but a real graphics engine called GeForce GTX970M. There are not many better options for notebooks, so you can be very “liberal” with settings and resolution on games. Every game will run, and most of them with full eye candy on. For example, if you’re into GTA 5 you’re going to get a smooth +60FPS if you up the settings to high and resolution to 1920×1080. Another popular title, Battlefield 4 will net around the same with ultra settings.

How about other components under the hood?

No matter how you look at it, there’s a lot of performance under the hood of Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV. The main thing, the processor, is Intel Core i7-6700HQ which is very similar to the older powerhouse i7-4720HQ in performance (both get ~8000 points in CPU Mark). This i7-6700HQ is a quad-core unit with 2.6GHz clock speed and 3.5GHz turbo, and will handle everything smooth be it a lighweight or heavyweight program you’re planning to use.

The memory amount is very gamer and power user friendly as well. 16GB DDR4 RAM makes sure no program should lag, and also serious multitasking is possible on this rig. It is installed on two 8GB sticks, and Dell specifications tell me the current sixteen gigabytes is the maximum memory for this system.

As with other high-end Alienwares, also this model is equipped with a dual storage set-up: 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and 256GB M.2 solid-state drive. The division is simple: put all movies, videos and bigger files on the hard drive part and your favorite-games and other frequently accessed files to SSD for fast start-up.

What devices and peripherals does the computer accept?

You’re good to hook up peripherals like gaming mouse/keyboard to Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV – it welcomes those with its four USB ports. Three of the ports are USB 3.0 while one is USB Type-C with support for Thunderbolt 3, too. The only dedicated video output is HDMI, but it’s sufficient since all displays these days support HDMI.

You can connect your microphones and headphones to the laptop as well.

For some reason, optical drive is not included. You can not install games from discs right away, but get an external DVD burner and the problem is solved. You might also use the SD(HC/XC) card slot for moving some smaller files, such as photos from your camera.

Connecting this notebook to Internet is easy, you can choose between the 1000Mbps RJ-45 port (=cable) or 802.11ac built-in WiFi adapter with Bluetooth 4.1 support.

Any other benefits?

Yes, the screen! Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV has a gorgeous 15.6″ non-touch display supporting 3840×2160 resolution, also known as Ultra HD. You might want to use lower resolution for non-gaming purposes since everything, such as text and icons, will look very small on the screen.

The notebook includes a heavy-duty 8-cell 92WHr battery which, surprisingly, lasts for ca. 4 hours under web browsing and 2 hours gameplay. It’s good compared to other notebooks for players.

The laptop has a high-quality Full HD webcam, shooting videos with it is not a problem.

Backlit keyboard is available.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system.

Summing it up

Alienware AW15R2-8469SLV is a very powerful, if expensive, laptop for avid gamers; those guys and gals who take their hobby seriously enough to be ready to spend a big buck for their “instrument”. For there is no lack of performance in this laptop. All games you want to play will run on high settings and 1920×1080 resolution, meaning full eye candy. You can even try the UHD resolution for some games and FPS will be likewise smooth. Not a surprise, every type of software will also run without problems. But as the laptop is so pricey, I can only recommend it if gaming is your hobby number one!
