All the friends of gaming, attention! Here’s a laptop that has been selling well lately. It’s called Alienware AW15R2-1546SLV and it features top-level components like 6th Generation Core i5 processor, Full HD screen and of course, a real gaming graphics card GeForce GTX965M. I’ll tell you my thoughts about it below…

The good

Most components in Alienware AW15R2-1546SLV are heavyweight gaming friendly. For example, the processor is Intel Core i5-6300HQ, a quad-core unit with 2.3GHz clock and 3.2GHZ turbo speed. Now, it reaches around 5600 points in CPU Mark which is pretty good for a laptop, many general use notebooks get processors in the 3000-4000 points range.

Another advantage is the high-end graphics card, the GeForce GTX965M with 2GB of its own GDDR5 memory. You can use high (or even ultra) settings and 1080p resolution without worries, for example GTA 5 will give around 50FPS on such settings. Naturally, simpler types like Minecraft, League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Go will be a walk in the park here.

The laptop contains a 15.6″ Full HD screen, and thanks to the fast graphics card you can enjoy the native resolution of 1080p all the way. It is not a touchscreen, but oftentimes gamers don’t mind.

The memory type is DDR4 (frequency 2133MHz) and there are two 4GB sticks installed, totaling at 8GB. It’s quite a lot already, but you can upgrade it to at least 16GB – even 32GB total might be possible since DDR4 supports 16GB sticks.

The bad

Not the best thing for many, Alienware AW15R2-1546SLV comes with an old-school hard drive. It surely offers one terabyte storage, but the spindle speed of 7200RPM is far behind solid-state drives. But a good thing, there should be a free M.2 slot for additional SSD. I recommend installing one if absolute performance is what you’re after.

The unit comes with a beefy battery for sure, rated at 8-cell 92Wh. But the components are quite power hungry so you won’t get long battery life. 1-2 hours is your best when gaming, and around 4 hours if web surfing.

Other important things

Connections should be sufficient here, for example you’ll find four USB ports – three are USB 3.0 and one is the newer USB Type-C one (supports Thunderbolt 3 as well). There’s also a dedicated HDMI-out for hooking up a monitor or HDTV.

You can reach the Internet via the Gigabit RJ-45 port or the WiFi adapter with Bluetooth 4.1 support.

One thing to keep in mind, this laptop features no optical drive. Not everybody needs one in the first place, but if you do, get a cheap external DVD burner.

The laptop has a backlit keyboard, you can choose the color yourself.

Summing it up

Alienware AW15R2-1546SLV is not a bad notebook at all, especially if you have some extra money to spend. As said above, it can run the majority of games with high settings and 1920×1080, even the heavier ones like GTA 5. There are not many bad things about it, but the hard drive might not be fast enough for everybody – luckily it can be upgraded easily. If you’re a gamer getting this kind of Alienware should be worth it.
