If you don’t need a portable gaming machine, then desktop is your best choice. They offer better performance for your buck than laptops, so you’ll get faster components for the same money with a desktop. One example of such a gaming beast is Acer Predator AG6-710-70001, a brand name computer with Core i7 processor, DDR4 RAM and GeForce GTX970 graphics card. It looks like the real deal, but let’s take a closer look before saying the final word…

So how good is it for gaming?

A computer can’t get much better for gaming. The main reason is, Acer Predator AG6-710-70001 includes a dedicated, high-end graphics card called GeForce GTX 970 (4GB GDDR5). And it’s indeed the desktop version, not the mobile version. Simply put, you can play any game with maxed out settings. For example, GTA 5 will give you a smooth ~50FPS. Another example, The Witcher 3 will run at over 40 frames per second.

It’s also possible to replace the graphics engine (however dual cards are not supported). There’s one PCI-e x16 slot on the mainboard and the current card is connected to that. The power supply wattage is a whopping 730W so you don’t need to upgrade the PSU.

How about performance for programs?

Acer Predator AG6-710-70001 is a beast for complex software as well. The processor is one of the best you can currently get, the quad-core Intel Core i7-6700K with 4.0GHz clock speed and 4.2GHz turbo. In CPU Mark tests it beats every other processor, getting around 11000 points in the benchmark.

The desktop features 16GB DDR4 RAM, unfortunately I have no idea if it’s two 8GB sticks or one 16GB. But four memory slots are present all in all, meaning the maximum RAM this rig takes is a nice 64GB.

For storage you’ll get a 1TB 7200RPM SATA 3 hard drive + 128GB M.2 solid-state drive. There are in total three 3.5″ bays, meaning you can put in an extra drive if you want to.

What ports and connections it includes?

Acer Predator AG6-710-70001 includes eight USB ports which is about the average of desktops. Six of those are USB 3.0 and two are USB 2.0. Back of the graphics card has outputs for DVI-D, HDMI and two miniDisplayPorts – it supports at least three monitors at the same time.

Audio ports include line-in and line-out and the usual microphone/headphone connectors.

You can connect the computer to Internet with either Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) adapter or the installed 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card.

The desktop features a DVD burner, but it doesn’t work with BluRays. A slot for SD cards is present, too.

Other important things

No monitor is included with the purchase, however SteelSeries gaming mouse and keyboard are.

Operating system is Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

Summing it up

Acer Predator AG6-710-70001 can run all games at maxed out settings, there’s no doubt about that. The GTX970 is one of the best graphics cards currently available, and the latest generation Core i7 processor with 16GB memory isn’t any worse. But the thing is, this desktop is quite expensive. You might be able to assemble one from parts yourself and that could be cheaper. On the other hand, not everybody wants to build a machine themselves. If you want a ready-made computer for extreme gaming, then this Acer would be close to a perfect match for you.
