Acer Predator 17 G9-791-78CE is definitely not your average notebook: it features a super fast Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB memory, HDD & SSD combo and state-of-the-art GeForce GTX980M graphics card. So indeed, it’s perfect for gaming. At the same time, the laptop is very expensive. Let me tell you if it’s really worth the money or not…

How’s gaming on it?

For sure, Acer Predator 17 G9-791-78CE is meant for players. Its graphics engine is the GeForce GTX980M (4GB GDDR5), about the best gaming card there exists for notebooks. As a rule of thumb you can play any game with ultra settings and 1080p while retaining smooth frame rates. For example, GTA 5 will run close to 60FPS on the said settings. Even with the very demanding Witcher 3 you’ll get ca. 40 frames per second. Now talk about some real gaming experience!

General performance

Of course, this Acer is good for other activities as well. There’s plenty of processing power thanks to the Intel Core i7-6700HQ – a quad-core 2.6GHz (3.5GHz turbo) unit. If you were to compare it to others you’d find it beats about any laptop processor out there. The average CPU Mark for this i7 is around 8000, regular processors are in the 3000-4000 range these days. Most heavyweight notebook processors get 7000-8000 points.

The motherboard on Acer Predator 17 G9-791-78CE houses four memory slots for DDR4 chips. Two slots are taken by 8GB modules, meaning the memory amount is 16GB now. The official specifications tell me maximum memory would be a whopping 64GB, that you can get with four 16GB sticks (yes, DDR4 supports that).

The storage solution couldn’t get any better. One drive is a 1TB 7200RPM SATA HDD, meant for big, less frequently accessed files. But then there’s also a 256GB solid-state drive – throw your games there and enjoy very fast loading times on them. Both drives should also be upgradeable in case you’re not happy with them.

Ports and connections

Acer Predator 17 G9-791-78CE has five USB ports in total. The majority, four, are USB 3.0. Then there’s the new USB 3.1 Type C port, it works as Thunderbolt 3 as well. Dedicated video outputs include HDMI and DisplayPort, and both can be used simultaneously.

Internet connectivity is excellent, there is a full Gigabit RJ-45 port available in addition to dual-band 2×2 A/C WiFi adapter supporting Bluetooth 4.1.

You’ll also get a BluRay burner, you’ll be able to use that for creating and reading CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. SD card reader is there too, slip in a memory card if you want.

The front-facing webcam offers 1280×720 video resolution, that should be enough for occasional video chats.

Other important things

The screen has received a lot of praise. It’s a 17.3″ display and of course 1920×1080 resolution is supported (however touch is not). It’s an IPS panel for accurate colors and closer to 180 degree viewing angles.

Keyboard has a red backlight feature.

The 8-cell Li-ion battery should last for 1.5-2 hours if gaming, and around four if just surfing the web.

Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is the operating system.

Well, as somebody put it, Acer Predator 17 G9-791-78CE is “too good to be true”. It’s indeed a beast, no matter what you use it for the laptop will handle that with ease. Games will run at ~60FPS using higher settings, very complex software will work without the system slowing down. But there’s a huge price for this, as this Acer is a damn expensive notebook. It’s not a casual user’s laptop, rather it’s for serious gamers who only want the best (and have enough money for that!).
