Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77FS) is a laptop of extraordinary performance. At the same time, it’s a laptop of quite an extraordinary price. The unit is intended for gamers who are usually prepared to pay premium for their fast gaming rigs. But is this Acer worth your money? Does it run your games well? Read on and find the answer…

Processor is strong in Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77FS). It’s the Core i7-4720HQ, a model known for its high performance (over 8000 points in Passmark tests, “general use laptops” get half or less than that). The CPU has four cores and a clock speed of 2.6GHz, although with turbo it’s increased to 3.6GHz. The i7-4270HQ can handle heavy software and games with no lag whatsoever.

There’s 16GB memory installed, the maximum the system supports. Sixteen gigabytes is generally huge amount of RAM for a laptop, and I can’t think of a reason you would ever need more.

There are two drives, a 1024GB 5400RPM hard drive and an 256GB SSD, in this machine. You’re getting best of the both worlds: a huge storage drive and very fast performance. Windows 8.1 should boot up in seconds, programs should start up quickly.

Graphics and screen

Like a true gaming laptop, Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77FS) features a premium screen. Sized at 15.6 inches, the resolution is 1920×1080 and panel type is IPS, contributing to great color accuracy. It’s not a touch display, but indeed the other treats make it a high quality item.

GeForce GTX 960M is what makes this laptop. It’s the graphics engine, and pretty good one, at least in comparison to integrated Intel HD models of inexpensive laptops. Most games, even the latest ones, can be played with full settings and Full HD resolution. For example, GTA V would give you nice 40+ FPS on such details. Older games even more than that, but for less demanding titles I would recommend a cheaper notebook.

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77FS) comes with three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output and a Gigabit RJ-45 connector. All are located on the right, so cable spaghetti might happen.

Optical drive is not included, keep that in mind. The SD card reader might help a bit, at least if your files are on memory cards. Networking is provided by a 802.11 AC WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 card.

There’s a fixed 1280×720 webcam, so you’re welcome to chat with your friends on Skype video.

Other things to remember

The laptop weighs 5.29 pounds, which isn’t bad. In fact, most 15 inchers are similar. Battery life can’t be too much on such high-power components, I’d be surprised if you got more than 3 hours.

Keyboard is backlit and a numpad is included on the right hand side.

Closing thoughts

If it’s modern games with decent FPS on high settings you want, Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77FS) is able to deliver that to you. Its i7 processor and dedicated graphics can tackle titles like GTA V and Battlefield 4 with no problem. Also software will be handled accordingly. Certainly, there are some bad things about it, such as the location of ports on the right, but in my opinion that is not a deal breaker. Getting this thing on a little discount would constitute a good deal if you ask me.
