Acer, one of my favorite laptop manufacturers. What, you don’t agree with me? Well that’s understandable – sometimes people think they are inferior quality. But many, including me, have different opinion about them. I’ve used Acer laptop for years with no problems to think about. And in this review, we’ll see if the Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y laptop changes your perhaps low opinion about the brand.

An excellent processor is included in Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y. It’s the Intel Core i7-5500U, a dual-core CPU with 2.4GHz clock and 3.0GHz turbo speed. The best thing is, it belongs to the 5th generation Intel family, so improvements from older models should be evident. Early benchmarks show around 10% better performance compared to the previous generation i7-4500U. The processor should be enough for casual and power users alike.

The notebook comes with 8GB memory, an amount not be ashamed about. There are two RAM slots on the mainboard, and as far as I know both are occupied by 4GB chips. If you’re after a performance boost, you can of course take the installed modules out and put larger ones in.

There’s a mechanical 1024GB hard drive offering you plenty of storage. It’s the biggest option currently available for laptops, equaling to around one hundred thousand of high quality JPEG photos. There are however people who don’t require that insane storage but want more speed. If you have the know-how, you can replace the hard drive with a solid-state drive to increase your system and program loading times.

Display and graphics

The screen is pretty good. Featuring the most common size 15.6 inches, it also has a 1920×1080 resolution. That is something many people, especially tech-savvy ones, like. It’s not however IPS panel but regular TN, so viewing angles aren’t probably top notch. Also bear in mind touch isn’t supported, but I wouldn’t personally see this as a disadvantage. The operating system is indeed the touch-friendly Windows 8.1, yet I’m using it daily with normal screen and have had no problems so far.

Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y is much better than your average budget laptop, but it’s still not pricey enough to feature dedicated graphics. Instead, there’s the processor-integrated Intel HD 5500 unit prepared to serve your games with alright FPS. I say that because the HD 5500 is one of the fastest models in Intel HD series, and together with speedy Core i7 CPU it should be decent. A real life example, Battlefield 4 should run with ~30FPS on lower settings and resolution. The same is true for many similar heavy titles, although lighter games (Tomb Raider for example) will work fine with more eye candy on.

Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y features HDMI and VGA ports which mean connecting an HDTV or desktop display is possible. Also three USB ports are present, but just one of them is USB 3.0.

Networking options however are excellent. For folks who like wires, there’s a speedy Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 port. If you prefer wireless, you can enjoy the 802.11 A/C WiFi. In addition, Bluetooth 4.0 is supported.

Optical drive is left out, so in order to use DVDs you have to plug in an external drive. There’s also Secure Digital card reader which might be helpful if you have files on memory cards.

The webcam on this model offers 1280×720 resolution which is up to today’s standards. Using it for Skype video is possible.

What other things to keep in mind?

The unit weighs good 5.62 pounds, just like many other 15 inchers. A 6-cell battery is provided, said to offer up to 7-hours battery life, however ~4 hours is much closer to what you’ll actually get.

There’s no backlit keyboard on Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y, the model is not premium enough. A standard 10-key pad is available on the keyboard’s right.

Summing it up

It looks like Acer made a worthwhile product again. That’s because solid price-performance ratio. For quite a low cost you’ll get excellent Core i7 processor, 8GB RAM and a Full HD display. Okay, backlit keyboard would’ve been nice, but personally I wouldn’t care. There are not major blunders I can see, a minor one is having only one USB 3.0 port. But all in all, Acer Aspire V 15 V3-572-734Y is a great laptop. Recommended choice for those who want value for their money.
