You don’t want that much performance but rather an affordable laptop for everyday computing? Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX could be something to think about. Its priced below 300 dollars and includes hardware enough for basic tasks. In the review below, I’ll tell you more about its features you might find useful.
Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX has a dual-core processor called Intel Celeron N2840. Clock speed maxes at 2.58GHz on burst frequency, although any Celeron is not known for their great speed. These chips work fine for lightweight use, like web browsing or even Netflix and other video services, but most power users and gamers would probably do wise to pick a heftier processor.
The RAM amount is typical 4GB. That’s installed on one chip, and maximum supported memory is 8GB. I don’t know if one memory slot is unoccupied on the mainboard. If it’s not, you can always replace the old chip for a bigger memory.
There’s an adequate amount of hard drive space for a budget laptop. 500GB is good for storing hundreds of movies, for example. Of course its 5400RPM speed can’t compete with quick solid-state drives, but a low-cost notebook can’t have it all.
The operating system is Windows 8.1 (64-bit).
Screen and graphics
Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX has a small display. At 11.6″ diagonal, the laptop is rather portable. Flipside is suitability for entertainment use where a large screen might be better idea. The resolution is 1366×768 which for a 11.6 inches display is alright.
Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail) is the name of the graphics chip in this notebook. If you know something about these things, you can right away see there’s not too much gaming performance. That engine is a slow one, and many modern, graphics heavy games will have FPS below 20 with it. Minecraft wouldn’t drag though, especially if you kept settings at minimum.
Connections of Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX include two USB ports: one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0. HDMI output is available, good if you want to use this small laptop with a larger HDTV or other display.
The Acer has a fast wired networking, a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. There’s also a 802.11b/g/n WiFi if you prefer wireless. In addition, Bluetooth support is mentioned in the specifications.
A notebook this small doesn’t have an optical drive. This Acer is no exception, it’s missing a DVD drive. It has, however, an SD media card reader. If that’s not enough for you, you can always use an external DVD drive that connects to USB.
A 1280×720 webcam and basic microphone are available, so video chats are possible on this computer.
Other things to keep in mind?
Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX should be a good choice for on-the-go person. It’s small and weighs just 2.8 pounds. The 3-cell battery is of course just mediocre, probably giving ~4 hours running time with a single charge.
No 10-key numpad or backlight are available on the keyboard.
Acer Aspire ES1-111-C1MX’s strong sides are affordable price and portability. If you’re a road warrior without the need for a power laptop this Acer could be an ace. It runs all the everyday programs, such as web browser and YouTube without problems. Gaming is limited to low end titles. Not everybody needs a powerful notebook – a less fancy laptop like this Acer suffices for many very well.
