No need for fancy computer or uber-heavy performance? No problem, a basic desktop computer like Acer Aspire ATC-780-UR61 probably suffices for you. There’s plenty of performance with its Core i5 processor and 8GB RAM so everyday computing shouldn’t be problematic. But let’s not be too quick to judge, perhaps a closer examination reveals something…

The good

When speaking about performance, Acer Aspire ATC-780-UR61 is everything a casual computer user wants. The processor is Intel Core i5-6400, a decent quad-core unit with 2.7Ghz clock speed and 3.3GHz turbo boost. As you probably know, i5s are good for heavier use as well, so if you have Photoshop waiting for you, don’t be afraid! This is also true when looking at the RAM, 8GB DDR4 (maximum 16GB) is installed which is enough for pretty much anybody out there.

Networking is not limited to the Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 jack, there is 802.11AC WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter available, too!

The neutral

Just one storage drive is inside, a spinning 1TB 7200RPM hard drive connected to SATA3 interface. Being a large drive (in storage space) it’s not as fast when compared to solid-state drives. Well, it’s a good thing that you can always install SSD if you remove the case!

The number of USB ports on this Acer is six. Four are USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0. The video outputs are HDMI and VGA, you can connect a PC monitor or HD television to those.

The desktop has a DVD writer and SD card slot; the latter is popular for uploading images from digital cameras to computer.

Operating system is the usual Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

The bad

Acer Aspire ATC-780-UR61 is no good for gaming, at least if you want to try new games or those that are heavy on graphics. The reason you can guess: an integrated graphics engine called Intel HD 530 which is quite a slow. It can run titles like GTA 5 or Fallout 4, but only on minimum settings and the FPS won’t be better than 20-30. But you’re in luck if older games are your cup of tea, Minecraft and similar ones are not an issue for this system. And also keep in mind the unit has a free PCI-e x16 slot, so installing a dedicated graphics card is possible!

As great as it would be, this desktop doesn’t come with a monitor, just USB keyboard and mouse.

I don’t think there is anything that sticks out like a sore thumb, in good or bad, with Acer Aspire ATC-780-UR61. It offers a great deal of performance for home users, no matter if it’s just web surfing or video editing you are up to. There’s also a WiFi card so you don’t need to use cable for networking. Just steer away from heavyweight gaming (too feeble graphics card) and you should be only happy with this simple Acer!
